AISI or SAE 4140 steel alloy is a low-alloy steel containing chromium and molybdenum as strengthening agents. Its chemical composition is seen bellow. AISI/SAE 4140 grade is a versatile alloy with good atmospheric corrosion resistance and reasonable strength up to around 600º F (315º C.) It shows good overall combinations of strength, toughness, wear resistance and fatigue strength. It has high fatigue strength, abrasion and impact resistance, toughness, and torsional strength.
AISI 4140 alloy steel has high ductility. It can be formed using conventional techniques in the annealed condition. It requires more pressure or force for forming because it is tougher than plain carbon steels.
The alloy is readily machinable.

This medium carbon alloy grade is widely used for many general purpose parts requiring
high tensile strength and toughness.
Simple shapes might be machined following a normalizing treatment, whereas more complex shapes will require annealing. At the carbon level of this grade, a structure of coarse lamellar pearlite to coarse spheroidite is normally optimum for machinability. Pre hardened and tempered 4140 can be further surface hardened by flame or induction hardening and by nitriding.

4140 may be heat treated over a wide range to give the combined
advantages of proper hardness, strength and ductility. In conditions where localized
hardness may be required, this steel is readily flame or induction hardened.
Because its components alloy 4041 is often informally referred to as chromoly steel (common variant stylings include chrome-moly, cro-moly, CrMo, CRMO, CR-MOLY, and similar). They have an excellent strength to weight ratio and are considerably stronger and harder than standard 1020 steel, but are not easily welded (need pre and post weld thermal treatment to avoid cold cracking). While these grades of steel do contain chromium, it is not in great enough quantities to provide the corrosion resistance found in stainless steel.

AISI 4140 has good machinability. Operations such as turning, hobbing, drilling, sawing, broaching, tapping and milling can be easily performed using the recommendations provided by the machine's manufacturer for ideal tool type-feeds and speeds. 4140 in the hardened and tempered as supplied condition has good to very good machinability and operations such as sawing, turning, drilling, broaching, hobbing, milling and tapping can be carried out satisfactoraly using machine manufacturers recommendations for suitable tool type - feeds and speeds.
